Michael Calvert, Economist

Drawing on his strong background in economics and finance, Michael delivers sophisticated economic analysis for complex regulatory and commercial decisions.

Michael specialises in translating complex economic problems into clear, actionable insights. Since joining us in early 2023, he has developed substantial quantitative analysis that has been used to inform high stakes decisions related to regulatory frameworks, financial evaluations, economic impact assessments, and competition concerns.

His detail-oriented nature and analytical rigour has proved invaluable in assisting in the preparation of expert reports for litigation and class action proceedings, including in the context of wage disputes, personal lending, cost of capital determinations, application of incentive schemes, economic damages assessment, and competition matters. Michael has also conducted regulatory due diligence for infrastructure assets, performed detailed geographic market assessments, executed financial analysis, and has been involved in several projects related to modelling the wholesale electricity market in the National Electricity Market. This experience enables him to elicit and effectively communicate the drivers of intricate market dynamics.

Michael’s combination of financial and economic expertise allows him to bring a diverse perspective to complex analytical challenges. He holds a Master of Commerce in economics and finance from the University of Canterbury, where his dissertation used econometric techniques to examine whether bank competition leads to efficient capital allocation. Michael has also completed internships with the Bank of New Zealand’s financial markets team and at Impact Ventures, a New Zealand firm specialising in impact investing advisory and corporate finance.
