As the world’s largest coal exporting port, the Port of Newcastle is an important contributor to economic activity in Australia. We find that in 2018-19 this amounted to $1.5 billion in economic activity in Australia, and around 9,000 jobs.
Looking ahead, it plans to construct a multiuse deep-water terminal capable of accommodating large container ships from Australia’s international trading partners with the objective to provide competition in NSW container port services and reduce shipping costs for importers and exporters. We estimate that the construction of this terminal would contribute $2.5 billion in economic activity, and generate a further 15,000 jobs.
