An upgrade to the capacity of the existing interconnector between NSW and Queensland has been identified by AEMO as a priority transmission investment that will provide substantive benefits to the National Electricity Market.
HoustonKemp worked with TransGrid and Powerlink in applying the RIT-T to the QNI upgrade, which identified the preferred option involving transmission works in NSW. Subsequently HoustonKemp advised TransGrid on its Contingent Project Application to the AER. We provided a report that reviewed the consistency of the proposed capex with the requirements of the regulatory framework. Our report is available here.
The AER has determined that the RIT-T was applied correctly to the proposed QNI upgrade and has approved the majority of the capital expenditure sought by TransGrid. This represents the completion of the regulatory process for the QNI upgrade, and allows the investment process to proceed.
