Access rights granted to large-scale renewable and storage energy in NSW Renewable Energy Zones

EnergyCo has recently announced that more than 10 GW of renewable energy generation and storage capacity is granted access rights to connect to the South West and Central-West Orana Renewable Energy Zones in New South Wales (NSW).

The total capacity spans across 14 projects, with 10 projects in Central-West Orana REZ totalling 7.15 GW capacity, and 4 projects in South West REZ totalling 3.56 GW capacity.

HoustonKemp congratulates all parties involved in achieving these significant milestones in the renewable energy transition in NSW.

We are pleased to have assisted EnergyCo in the implementation of the access rights assessment framework in these two REZs. The assessment framework is focused on optimising the utilisation of transmission network capacity in each of these REZs, without triggering excessive curtailment beyond certain curtailment thresholds.

The assessments highlighted the importance of having diversity of renewable generation technologies in the mix, and the crucial role of large-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS) in the firm-up of variable renewable energy generation.

Further information

Renewable Energy Zones (REZ) represent locations across the National Electricity Market with abundance of high-quality solar and wind resources, making them suitable for renewable power generation and batteries that can help store energy efficiently.

The South West REZ in NSW is located around Hay and takes in towns including Balranald and Buronga (NSW). The Central West Orana REZ is centred by Dubbo and Dunedoo (NSW).
